We should be incredibly proud of the support we are giving the Ukrainian people in standing up to Russian aggression.
Since the invasion of Crimea, the UK has assisted Ukraine and other countries in Eastern Europe to build up their own defensive capability. Since 2017, the British Army has led a NATO Battlegroup in Estonia, providing much needed assurance to NATO countries and other partners in the region. This has resulted in a doubling of the number of British forces deployed and additional tanks, armoured fighting vehicles and other equipment.
We have also increased our presence in Cyprus in response to Russia's support of Syrian dictator Assad. This has included extra Typhoon fighter jets and additional UK warships patrolling the Eastern Mediterranean alongside other NATO allies such as Canada, Italy, Spain and Turkey.
To strengthen our assistance to Poland and other neighbouring countries, we have sent in the Royal Marines. There are also an additional 1,000 troops ready to go in any humanitarian response to events in Ukraine. Experts in these types of operations have also been sent to other NATO allies such as Hungary, Slovakia and Romania.
I have provided further information regarding training, delivery of British weapons and other assistance which you can access using the other menu options on this page.
