I am pleased to back this bill, which has now made it through it's second reading in Parliament.
Cats and dogs are not inanimate objects but sentient beings capable of experiencing distress and other emotional trauma when they are stolen from their owners or keepers.
Anyone found guilty of stealing a pet will face up to five years in prison, a fine, or both.
These are range of measures the conservative government is taking towards animal welfare.
Another bill going through Parliament, is the Animal Welfare ( Livestock Exports ) Bill. This bill prohibits the export of certain livestock from Great Britain for slaughter.
The welfare of animals - be it farm animals or pets - is important to me. I will continue to support these type of bills whenever possible.
